Outpost Sentries are heavy-duty patrol units stationed at the edges of colonized space. Their reinforced frames can withstand small-arms fire and low-grade energy weapons. Where a Sentry stands watch, hostile incursions tend to find easier targets elsewhere.

Extended Lore

The Outpost Sentry program began as a stopgap measure during the Second Frontier Crisis, when colonists on the outer rim were being raided faster than the fleet could respond. The solution was brute-force deterrence: station something large, visible, and obviously armed at every vulnerable outpost, and let the raiders decide whether the loot was worth the fight. It worked. Raiding activity dropped by sixty percent within the first year of deployment.

Outpost Sentries are built around a reinforced duranium endoskeleton that can absorb sustained small-arms fire without structural compromise. Their armor plating is deliberately over-specified for their threat environment — a Sentry stationed at a mining colony doesn't need to survive anti-vehicle weapons, but the psychological impact of watching rifle rounds bounce off its hull is worth the extra manufacturing cost.

Each Sentry is equipped with a rotating weapon mount that accepts any standard-issue armament, from light pulse rifles to heavy plasma cannons. The choice of loadout is left to the local garrison commander, creating a deterrence uncertainty that intelligence services consider valuable — an approaching raider never knows whether the Sentry on the perimeter is carrying a peashooter or a ship-killer.

The units operate on thirty-six-hour patrol cycles with six-hour maintenance windows. During active patrol, they follow semi-randomized routes that ensure full perimeter coverage while remaining unpredictable enough to prevent timing-based infiltration. Sentries that detect contacts are programmed to hold position and broadcast an alert rather than pursue — they are anchors, not hunters, and their value lies in the certainty of their presence rather than the speed of their response.
