Lore

Cargo Haulers were originally civilian freight mechs repurposed for military logistics. Their massive cargo bays can carry supplies, wounded personnel, or improvised munitions. In a pinch, their hydraulic arms can crush hostile infantry — though their operators insist that's not a feature.

Extended Lore

The CH-4 Cargo Hauler was never meant to see combat. Designed by Meridian Industrial as a dockside freight handler, the original model spent its first decade loading and unloading container ships at orbital transfer stations. It was built for endurance, not speed — a lumbering quadruped with hydraulic arms strong enough to stack ten-tonne cargo containers and a power plant rated for twenty-hour continuous operation.

The military conversion happened almost by accident. During the Siege of Outpost Kessler, when the garrison's armored vehicles were destroyed in the opening bombardment, a desperate supply sergeant welded improvised armor plating onto three Cargo Haulers and drove them into the breach. The Haulers absorbed punishment that would have destroyed purpose-built military vehicles, and their hydraulic arms proved devastatingly effective in close quarters. The sergeant received a commendation. Meridian Industrial received a military contract.

The militarized CH-4M retains the civilian model's core strengths — durability, cargo capacity, and mechanical simplicity — while adding basic armor plating, a reinforced cockpit, and hardpoints for light weapon systems. The conversion is deliberately minimal. Military planners learned from the Kessler incident that the Hauler's value lies in its versatility, not its combat power. A CH-4M can carry ammunition to the front line, evacuate wounded on the return trip, and serve as an improvised barricade if the position is overrun.

Hauler operators form a tight-knit community within the fleet, bonded by the shared experience of piloting the slowest, ugliest, and most essential vehicle in the inventory. Their unofficial motto — "Last to arrive, last to leave" — reflects both their operational reality and their stubborn pride.
