Signal Flares serve a dual purpose: marking targets for orbital strikes and blinding nearby hostiles with a burst of superheated plasma. Field commanders carry them as standard issue — cheap, effective, and satisfying to deploy.
Extended Lore
The Signal Flare is the oldest piece of equipment still in standard military issue — its basic design predates interstellar travel. The principle is elemental: ignite a chemical payload at extreme temperature, producing a burst of light and heat intense enough to be detected by orbital assets while simultaneously overwhelming the optical sensors of anything nearby.
Modern flares have evolved far beyond their chemical ancestors. The current-issue SF-7 uses a miniaturized plasma charge that burns at twelve thousand degrees for approximately 0.3 seconds, producing a flash visible from low orbit and a thermal bloom that temporarily blinds infrared sensors within a two-hundred-meter radius. The plasma charge is housed in a single-use cartridge small enough to fit in a belt pouch, making it the most portable offensive option available to infantry.
Flares serve multiple tactical roles depending on context. In their primary function, they mark targets for orbital fire support — a commander who fires a flare is painting a coordinate for the fleet's heavy weapons. In their secondary function, they serve as area-denial tools, forcing enemies to choose between blindness and retreat. In their tertiary function — one not officially sanctioned but universally practiced — they are used as improvised grenades, lobbed into enclosed spaces where the plasma discharge does considerably more than blind.
Every soldier, regardless of faction affiliation, carries at least two Signal Flares. They are the universal language of the battlefield: one flare means contact, two means emergency, three means position overrun. Even the Caxion, who communicate through electromagnetic pulses, have learned to read flare signals — proof that some technologies are too simple and too useful to be improved upon.
