Project Aether Lance was Dr. Kia Bell's most ambitious and controversial design — a weapon that channels the collective bandwidth of the entire local relay network into a single, precision-focused beam of destructive force. The beam penetrates any known defense system, passing through shields and armor as if they did not exist. The weapon's raw power is offset by its fragility — the focusing element burns out rapidly under the strain of channeling network-scale energy through a handheld device.

Project Aether Lance was classified at Level 7 — the highest security designation in the Terran military — from the moment Dr. Kia Bell submitted her initial design proposal. The weapon\'s theoretical framework was an extension of her doctoral work on resonance-cascade amplification: if the relay network\'s distributed energy could be channeled through a constructive interference pattern, the resulting beam would achieve energy density sufficient to penetrate any known defensive technology.
The prototype took three years to build. The focusing element — a hand-wound crystalline lattice of synthetic diamond filaments suspended in a supercooled vacuum chamber — required fabrication techniques that did not exist when Bell began the project. She invented them. The power coupling system, which draws energy from every relay node within a three-kilometer radius simultaneously, required modifications to the relay network\'s core architecture that the Network Integrity Board initially refused to authorize. Bell went over their heads to the Admiralty. She won.
The first live test was conducted at the Helix Range proving ground under conditions of extreme secrecy. Bell fired the Lance at a decommissioned cruiser hull shielded by three layers of standard barrier systems and twelve centimeters of reactive armor plating. The beam passed through all of it — shields, reactive layer, hull plating, internal bulkheads, and the armor on the far side — without measurable energy loss. The beam continued for another two kilometers before atmospheric dispersion finally degraded it below detectable levels. The test observers were silent for eleven seconds before anyone spoke.
The Lance\'s critical limitation is the focusing element\'s fragility. Each firing subjects the crystalline lattice to thermal and electromagnetic stress that exceeds its design tolerances, inducing micro-fractures that accumulate with each subsequent shot. After approximately two full-power firings, the lattice integrity degrades below the threshold required for constructive interference, and the beam diffuses into a harmless scatter of unfocused energy. Replacement lattices must be fabricated individually — each one requires six weeks of continuous fabrication — making the Lance a weapon of decisive moments rather than sustained engagement.
