"The weapons speak for themselves."
Lore
Dr. Kia Bell is the Terran military's most celebrated civilian contractor — a weapons physicist who holds more patents on directed energy systems than any three military research labs combined. Assigned to the Special Projects Division after her doctoral work on resonance-cascade weapon theory, she designed the Feedback Loop protocol, the Override Protocol, and the still-classified Project Aether Lance. In the field, she carries a prototype resonance cannon of her own design that channels the Terran relay network's full bandwidth into a devastating area-of-effect discharge. She has no military rank, wears no uniform, and answers to no chain of command — but when Dr. Bell speaks, admirals listen.
Extended Lore
Kia Bell was born on the orbital research station Archimedes-4, the daughter of two Terran network engineers who spent their careers maintaining relay infrastructure in the outer sectors. She grew up surrounded by technology and developed an intuitive understanding of electromagnetic systems before she could read. By age twelve, she had written a paper on relay signal optimization that was published in the Terran Journal of Applied Physics — the youngest author in the journal's history.
Her doctoral work at the Terran Institute of Applied Physics focused on resonance-cascade weapon theory — the study of how electromagnetic signals could be amplified through constructive interference to produce destructive energy discharges. Her dissertation, "Network-Amplified Resonance: A Framework for Directed Energy Weaponization of Communication Infrastructure," was immediately classified by the Terran military and earned her a direct invitation to the Special Projects Division.
At Special Projects, Bell designed three protocols that would fundamentally reshape Terran warfare. The Feedback Loop demonstrated that offensive and intelligence operations could be combined. The Override Protocol proved that the Terran network's bandwidth superiority could be weaponized against enemy command systems. And Project Aether Lance — still classified, still theoretical, still terrifying to anyone who has read the abstract — proposed using the entire Terran relay network as a single, planet-scale directed energy weapon.
Bell's decision to enter the field personally was driven by frustration. She became convinced that her weapons designs were being deployed suboptimally by commanders who didn't understand the underlying physics. Her solution was characteristic: she built a prototype resonance cannon, strapped it to a powered exoskeleton, and submitted a deployment request. The military, recognizing that denying Dr. Bell anything was an exercise in futility, approved the request with the caveat that she would receive no rank, no command authority, and no official protection.
In the field, Bell is a force of nature. Her resonance cannon channels the full bandwidth of the local relay network into a devastating area-of-effect discharge that damages every hostile in range. Between engagements, she optimizes the weapons systems of nearby Terran units, pushing their offensive capabilities beyond factory specifications with adjustments that only she truly understands. She has no military training, follows no tactical doctrine, and regularly ignores orders from officers who outrank everyone except the admiralty. And yet, every Terran commander who has worked with her reports the same thing: when Dr. Bell is on the field, you win.
She remains a civilian. She insists on this. The military has offered her every rank from Captain to Admiral, and she has declined each time with the same answer: "Ranks are for people who need permission to act. I don't." The admirals have stopped asking.
