Lore
Cascade Relays are small automated relay nodes that absorb and redistribute network traffic. Each time a protocol is broadcast through the network, the Cascade Relay strengthens its own structural integrity by channeling surplus signal energy into its defensive systems.
Extended Lore
Cascade Relays represent an innovation in Terran relay design — nodes that are not merely passive infrastructure but active participants in the network ecosystem. Traditional relay nodes receive, amplify, and retransmit data without altering their own state. Cascade Relays do the same, but they also harvest a small fraction of the energy carried by each transmitted protocol and redirect it into their own structural reinforcement systems.
The engineering principle is simple: every protocol broadcast through the Terran network carries both data and energy. The data is the payload — combat parameters, intelligence updates, coordination signals. The energy is the carrier wave — the electromagnetic force that propels the data through the relay infrastructure. Traditional nodes waste this carrier energy as heat. Cascade Relays capture it.
The captured energy is channeled into a network of structural reinforcement circuits embedded in the Relay's chassis. Each protocol that passes through the node adds a small but measurable amount of structural integrity — the equivalent of applying a thin layer of additional armor plating. Over the course of a battle, a Cascade Relay that has processed dozens of protocols becomes significantly harder to destroy than one that has been idle.
This self-reinforcing behavior makes Cascade Relays ideal for deployment at critical network junctions — points where high protocol traffic naturally converges. The more important the junction, the more protocols flow through it, and the more durable the Cascade Relay becomes. The result is a network that automatically hardens its most important nodes, without any conscious effort from the commander. Terran Network Architects consider the Cascade Relay one of the most elegant designs in the relay inventory — a rare case where the network's natural behavior produces optimal defensive outcomes.
