Lore

The Redundancy Matrix is a network subroutine that binds a unit's consciousness to the Terran medical grid. When the protected unit falls, the matrix triggers an emergency med-drone dispatch to the commander's position, patching wounds with the dead unit's pre-loaded med supplies.

Extended Lore

The Redundancy Matrix protocol emerged from an unlikely collaboration between the Terran Medical Corps and the Network Architecture Division. The Medical Corps needed a way to deliver emergency medical supplies to commanders in the heat of combat, when traditional supply lines were often disrupted. The Architecture Division had recently developed a technique for binding subroutines to individual units' network signatures, allowing automatic actions to be triggered by specific events — including unit destruction.

The resulting protocol works by embedding a medical dispatch subroutine into a unit's network identity. The subroutine lies dormant, consuming no resources, until the unit's vital signs drop to zero. At that moment, the subroutine activates and broadcasts a priority medical request to the nearest med-drone relay, which dispatches an automated medical package to the commander's last known position.

The medical package itself is remarkably compact — a cylindrical pod approximately twenty centimeters long containing compressed nano-fabrication gel, coagulant agents, and a stimulant injector. The pod is launched ballistically from the nearest relay station and arrives at the commander's position within seconds of the triggering unit's destruction. The process is entirely automatic: no human intervention, no communication required.

The ethical dimension of the Redundancy Matrix is worth noting. The protocol effectively transforms a living unit into a posthumous medical supply delivery system — the unit's death becomes the trigger for healing someone else. This has been controversial in some Terran academic circles, but the military's position is characteristically pragmatic: the unit is already dead, the medical supplies were already allocated, and the commander's survival takes priority. The name "Redundancy Matrix" itself captures the philosophy — in the Terran network, even death serves a purpose.
