Lore

Patrol Sentinels are heavy-armoured Terran infantry who walk predetermined routes along relay corridors. Their overlapping patrol patterns ensure that no section of the network goes unwatched for long. The first blow against a Sentinel rarely lands clean — their reactive plating absorbs the initial impact, buying precious seconds for the network to respond.

Extended Lore

Patrol Sentinels are the Terran answer to a problem that technology alone cannot solve: the relay corridors that connect Terran network nodes span thousands of kilometers of open terrain, and no sensor grid can watch every meter of every corridor simultaneously. The solution is boots on the ground — heavily armored infantry walking predetermined patrol routes, providing a visible deterrent and a physical presence that unmanned sensors cannot replicate.

Sentinel armor is built around a reactive plating system that represents one of the Terran military's most reliable defensive technologies. The plating contains a layer of pressurized gel sandwiched between two duranium sheets. When struck, the gel hardens instantaneously at the point of impact, distributing the force across a wider area and dramatically reducing penetration depth. The hardened gel then slowly relaxes back to its liquid state over approximately thirty seconds, ready to absorb the next hit.

This reactive system is most effective against the first attack — the gel responds fastest when undisturbed, and subsequent impacts find the gel still partially hardened from the previous strike, reducing its shock-absorption capacity. Sentinels are trained to exploit this characteristic, using the guaranteed survival of the first hit to assess the threat, identify cover, and broadcast contact reports to the network.

Patrol routes are calculated by the sector's central command AI, which generates semi-randomized paths that ensure complete corridor coverage while preventing predictable timing that an attacker could exploit. Sentinels walk these routes in overlapping pairs, maintaining line-of-sight contact with at least one other Sentinel at all times. The result is a walking perimeter that is simultaneously everywhere and nowhere specific — a physical manifestation of the Terran philosophy that the network's strength lies in redundancy, not individual power.
