Lore
Uplink Specialists are communications experts who maintain satellite uplinks in contested zones. Their portable relay packs can boost support signals to nearby Terran units, hardening their connections to the network backbone. Without Uplink Specialists, field commanders lose the real-time data feeds that make Terran warfare so precise.
Extended Lore
Uplink Specialists fill a critical role in the Terran communications hierarchy — they are the link between ground forces and the orbital satellite network that provides long-range intelligence, precision targeting, and strategic coordination. While Relay Engineers maintain the local network infrastructure, Uplink Specialists maintain the vertical connection that ties local networks to the fleet-wide battlenet.
Each Specialist carries a portable uplink pack weighing approximately forty kilograms — a ruggedized satellite transceiver with a folding antenna array, an encryption module, and a power supply rated for seventy-two hours of continuous operation. The pack can establish a stable connection to the nearest Terran communications satellite in under thirty seconds, even in environments with heavy electromagnetic interference.
The support boost that an Uplink Specialist provides to nearby units is a direct consequence of the satellite connection. Ground-level relay nodes have limited bandwidth and processing power, restricting the quality of intelligence they can provide. When an Uplink Specialist establishes a satellite link, they open a high-bandwidth channel that can carry orders of magnitude more data — enhanced sensor feeds, strategic analysis, predictive threat modeling, and real-time coordination with orbital assets.
Uplink Specialists are trained to operate independently in hostile territory, often deploying ahead of the main force to establish satellite coverage before the engagement begins. Their combat training emphasizes evasion and concealment over direct engagement — a dead Specialist means a blind sector. The Support Corps considers them the highest-priority deployment asset after Comm Officers, and their loss is felt immediately in the degradation of the local intelligence picture.
