Waypoint Drone

The first Waypoint Drones rolled off the Terran Assembly Line 7 production facility on Kepler Station nearly forty years ago. The original design was laughably simple — a spherical chassis, a single optical sensor, and a short-range transmitter — but that simplicity turned out to be their greatest asset. They required no specialized maintenance, no proprietary fuel cells, and no trained operators. A supply sergeant could unpack a crate of twelve, activate them with a single command pulse, and have a functioning perimeter network inside of ten minutes.

Over the decades, the design has been iterated on exactly twice. The Mark II added a secondary infrared sensor for low-visibility environments. The Mark III replaced the original nickel-hydride power cell with a solar-capacitor hybrid that extended operational life from six months to roughly four years. Neither revision changed the fundamental character of the unit: small, cheap, and everywhere.

Waypoint Drones operate on a mesh communication protocol that requires no central hub. Each drone relays data to its nearest neighbor, creating a self-healing surveillance net that degrades gracefully as units are destroyed or malfunction. Military analysts estimate that at any given time, roughly two hundred thousand Waypoint Drones are active across colonized space, forming the largest continuous sensor network ever deployed by any species. Most of them will never detect anything more threatening than a stray asteroid. The ones that do rarely survive long enough to transmit more than a single coordinate burst — but that burst is usually enough.
